This month, we’re thrilled to introduce Paul Machiele, one of Stillwater’s newest team members, whose prior experience at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brings invaluable perspective to our work related to transportation fuels policy.
During his 39-year career at EPA, much of it spent leading regulatory programs for transportation fuels, Paul developed long-standing relationships with stakeholders across the industry, including Stillwater. “Over the years, I interacted with many people who used Stillwater’s services,” he shared. “I always found their work to be technically sound, impartial, and above all, useful.”
His professional path frequently crossed with Dave Hackett and, more recently, Megan Boutwell. So, when Paul announced his retirement, Megan reached out right away. “She asked if I’d be interested in joining Stillwater as an associate to leverage my years of EPA experience. It just felt like a natural next step.”
What continues to energize Paul after nearly four decades in the field is the evolving policy landscape. “Transportation fuel policies have been my jam since I started at EPA in 1986,” he said. His career has spanned thousands of technical, legal, and policy discussions involving gasoline, diesel, alternative and renewable fuels, and feedstocks. “With that breadth of experience, I’ve accumulated enough knowledge to offer a unique perspective, and that’s exciting.”
Though still early in his consulting career, Paul has already supported several clients in reviewing and responding to EPA proposals. His engineering background, paired with years of collaboration with economists and attorneys, gives him a balanced and comprehensive approach. “It’s been especially rewarding to provide not only technical input, but also legal and policy context. That blend is something I really enjoy bringing to the table.”
Paul remains closely attuned to broad trends in the transportation fuel market. “I’m watching the many implications of the market’s shift toward electricity and renewable fuels,” he said. “There’s so much change underway, and it affects every part of the fuels landscape.”
Outside of work, family is Paul’s focus. “I’m blessed to be a father of four grown children and grandfather of nine (so far),” he said. Much of his time is spent with them, offering help wherever it’s needed. “As a recovering engineer, I enjoy home remodeling and maintenance, not just in my own house but in my kids’ homes too, giving me an opportunity to work together with my children and their spouses.”
He also gives back through service, leading his church’s middle school youth group and helping his wife coach the middle school cross-country team.
Paul’s regulatory expertise, broad market perspective, and thoughtful approach to problem-solving make him a tremendous asset to our clients and our team. We’re grateful to have Paul at Stillwater Associates and look forward to the leadership he brings to our work in this rapidly evolving energy landscape.
We see things others miss.
